Tony Chu is Back! John Layman and Rob Guillory Announce the Return of ‘Chew’
It's no secret that I love Louisiana native Rob Guillory. His artwork and storytelling ability is so inventive and unique, it's hard not to get sucked into his tales. Plus, in the grand scheme of things, he's a REALLY good dude and super likeable. So, kind of the perfect combination. But this is all ground I've covered before. It wasn't that long ago, I wrote 700+ words on why I think Rob is awesome.
But, the latest news out of the Lafayette native's camp is something all comic fans should be excited about - the return of Chew! But, it's going to be slightly different than the way you remember it.
John Layman & Rob Guillory's Reviving Chew in a New Format
For those that don't know, Chew was an award winning comic published by Image Comics between 2009 & 2016. It's one of the most acclaimed titles published by Image. It won Eisner Awards, Harvey Awards...in short, Chew is incredible.
If you loved Chew as much as I do, you know that 60 issues wasn't nearly enough. I guess for Layman & Guillory, they also agree. Because the creative duo is bringing back Tony Chu for another series of bizarre adventures.
However, this time, it won't be a monthly comic. They're going old school and turning Chew into a serialized, one page comic strip that will be featured in the brand spanking new Comics! The Magazine. According to a post from Rob's Facebook page, the new magazine wants to bring the fun of old comic magazines like Wizard & Flux to a new generation. According to Bleeding Cool, Agent Chu will be pursing a new threat in the brand new story - Adam Freeman (the villain is named after the magazine's publisher).
I, for one, miss Wizard Magazine. In fact, Wizard was the first magazine subscription I ever paid for...so I'm excited to see someone is trying to fill that void. And the fact they're kicking it off with a serialized version of Chew - just makes me more excited!
How to Subscribe to Comics! The Magazine
If this sounds like something you'd be into, you have to let your local comic book store know now. The first issue is set to hit stores on March 4th, but there is a deadline for retailers to order the mag on February 2nd.
Unlike Wizard, Comics! The Magazine will be delivered to your pull box just like a comic book for the low, low price of $2.99 per issue. So, if you want in and want to check out the next chapter of Chew, let your local retailer know so you can get hooked up!
